I've never been one for super complicated filters but I'm doing my best with this tank, right now I'm using the following for a 35 gallon mixed reef (link to build thread in signature):
1. 15 gallon sump
2. external media reactor containing - purigen and carbon
3. Chemi pure sock (kinda zip tied to the sump above the return pump
4. 10 gallons of refugium in the sump (live rock, 1-2" sandbed, mangrove sapling, a (banished) emerald crab, a tiny bit of caulerpa algae, as well as a zoa polyp)
At the moment, that's it, I have a UV I could add? I also plan on adding a skimmer soon (I'm not a huge believer in how necessary they are, but I'll play it safe). Also on the list is a doser to dose calcium, a few other elements yet to be decided, and food. I know my filter may be viewed differently as it is currently skimmer less, but that comes soon, I mean for now, how is it?

Looks like you've got a pretty good grip on things :) if you keep up with consistent water changes a skimmer isnt detrimental :)

Alright thanks, I'm glad to know its good, honestly the tank is looking great and my coral growth is awesome, mushrooms are splitting like crazy and zoa color is awesome too, getting some nice frags in too (wednesday I think). But on filtration should I add the UV? I don't want it to effect my pod population too much and while I used to be a firm believer of its use and always had one, it went out and I only found out weeks later, I only noticed because the little light was off and I was doing a water change, there was zero actual effect on my water.

Honestly if you're not having any issues I see no reason to implement it.

I've got a bit of splash going on in the sump, he was nipping at my zoas at night (and when I found him on my favorite one [that is still only 3 tiny polyps] he was moved down there)
