I have a hang on the back filter on my 10gallon and it is super quiet. (Aqueon Quietflow 30)
I just started my hang on the back filter for my 60 gallon and I feel like the motor is really loud and I can hear the trickling of water really loud. The water level is as high as it goes. Is it supposed to be this loud just because of the size? The noisy filter is Marineland Emperor Power Filter 400.

I am wondering if I should try the Aqueon Quietflow for my 60 gallon and return this Marineland?

I use the same filter, on the very back there should be a grey tab sticking out from the top, poking through the hood. Try messing with which level that sits at, mine sits at one notch below the max height.

No it shouldn't but you might try to take the impeller out as there might be something in there.
Air in your intake can cause this sound too.
If this is new maybe let it run a few days as it needs some break in time.

I have this problem if the tab gets hit while putting the hood on, its a matter of getting the filter to pull enough water through or not. Happens all the time, just have to put the tab back in place. I believe it's a variable speed switch for the inpeller.

Adjusting the grey tabs did help but the trickling sound is still loud in my opinion I guess I could add a little more water.
It is new so I will give it time for air to flow through. My husband works with pool pumps and he says it sound like there is air in there. So maybe it will clear up after it runs for a while.

Try to shake it lightly to give the air a push to flow with the water.
Sometimes moving the syphon tube in the filter up and down will do the trick too.

Also make sure that the tubes that spit water into the bio-wheel are pushing strong, if they are and you don't like the sound, just wrap Teflon tape around them.
