Is my lionfish perching or dying?

Theres no live rock as the tank is going under ich treatment, ammonia is .25, nitrates a bit high, no nitrite

Looks like he's just hanging out. Why do you think he's dying? Is he breathing OK?

Ammonia should be ZERO. Lions are very sensitive. Put some Seachem prime or amguard in the tank asap.

I thought they were very hardy as they are very disease tolerant and are overpopulated in florida, at least this is the info i got from strangers, whats better prime or amgard?

if you're testing ammonia with an API test kit, it always will read .25 as an FYI don't trust them

They maybe prolific in the Caribbean because of no predators doesn't mean they are that great in captivity.

They aren't for new tanks and they can be hard to get on frozen.with some never switching to frozen

Prime is easier to find. Any petco should have it. Prime also binds the nitrate for 48 hours.

They are very hardy. That's a Volitan. It's the easiest to keep. However, there is no ammonia in the ocean or any established tank. Lions are very sensitive to ammonia and nitrate. Keep nitrate under 40.

Volitans are easy to get on frozen. The smaller ones are tougher.

I had one that would out compete the other fish. I had to rehome him because he grew too fast.

Wait, did you say that you were doing ich treatment? Is there copper in the water? I don't think that you can use Prime with copper. Research it on here.

They do this often as does clownfish. Drop a piece of food and watch how quickly they come to life

Prime does NOT remove ammonia as claimed by manufacturer and will bind it temporarily but it has to go somewhere- does not disappear. Amquel good for nitrate but again an alternative and not a solution. They are somewhat resistant to disease but no fish is really tolerant to disease .
Water change is best and effective ammonia reducer and for frozen foods, ghost shrimp acceptable to wean them but silversides and krill are good foods to feed

Prime doesn't claim to remove ammonia, it says it binds it. It only claims to remove chlorine.

I don't know what your definition of hardy is. If you want a fish that can live in an ammonia bath and high nitrates, you might be hard pressed to find anything other than a damsel. Even then, it would be short lived.
