Just curious. I’m not trying to chase numbers specifically ph!, but just want to be sure I’m ok. This is with a pregnant wife and 3 dogs in the house so not sure if they contributing

Thats great, 8.5 is a goal for most people chasing ph lol. Fluctuation is also normal, when the lights are out less co2 is consumed. You can counter act it with dosing during the night, refugium on reverse cycle etc. but it will always be there.

I also thought the more people and pets in your house the lower the PH, but it's been like this consistently. I see many posts with reefers with low PH.

Make sure your probe is calibrated, put it in a 7 or 10 ph solution and see if it reads accurately.

Ya I have been meaning to do it. It's been a hot min since I have, but I tested manually and it was pretty spot on. I still might want to calibrate it though. Can I just put it in the fluid to see if it reads right without calibrating? Do I have to temp float the solution?

Yeah id temp float it and then just plop the probe into the ph solution see if it reads right, personally i like to get any previous salt water off the probe wiping it down real quick before going into solution but don't know if that makes any real difference.

I know have some sponges that I need to scrape off on the probe would that mess with the results or is what measures the PH inside the prob and not on the outside.

id clean it off, not that it would effect the measuring but it could effect the accuracy of the actual solution. So like for example it is meant to be a ph of 7.01 putting a wet probe with sponges and stuff in there might change it and then the probe will read the changed number and not 7.01

Visible growth on the probe is bad.

Be very gentle cleaning it. pH probes are typically made from very thin glass on the tip. Maybe just try soaking it overnight in full strength vinegar and see if the solids fall off easily.
