My cleaner shrimp has a black dot/sore on its side. I have seen it picked at it with its legs. It disappeared for a few days after it molted but it has come back. Is there anything I can do? Thanks in advance

If it molted & the blemish returned, I would assume it’s a natural marking on the shrimp. Was the blemish there since day one of introducing it into your tank?

The mark was not there when I got him. It’s not really a blemish it’s more of a sore or scab. I caught him with his foot in it digging out the black crud like picking at a scab. I do have a an anemone in the tank. Could it be a sting?

I see, could be a sting from the nem. What other tank mates are In there that can cause an injury if the shrimp gets to close? Like urchins, rabbit fish, other shrimps, sea star or some type of tube worm. I personally dose iodine to help invertebrates stay in good health. Also noticed the air stone in the background, any other equipment in the main display that can make contact with the shrimp & maybe cause the injury? What are your parameters? Hopefully someone else can jump in & help find the problem.

My BTA is the only thing that I think could have hurt him. The air stone is battery back up in case of power outage I do not have a sump and use a HOB skimmer. I never seen the shrimp go anywhere close to the intake.

can iodine harm anything else in the tank? Can you over dose your tank?
thank you for the response

It is turbellarian black spot disease which affects crabs/shrimps that are older or under stress that do not molt as fast, or crustaceans that hang out in substrates high in bacteria with chitinase activity. It sometimes indicates an issue with water quality, injury, or iodine issues, which none are critical. Highly likely, upon next molt, that will disappear.

Thanks so much for this info. I saw the black spot disease she doing research and figured I’d ask here.
