I have a 24 gallon sump from my previous tank. I was wondering if i used it for my 150 gallon , if it would be too small?

Advice appreciated!

You might be able to get away with it, but I would think it would be really hard to fit the appropriate equipment for a 150 gal in such a small space. Also need to consider enough free sump space in the event of a power failure so the sump won't overflow. Becomes a concern when sump volumes are small relative to main tank volume (or more accurately surface area).

My personal opinion:

  1. Yes, 24 gal is small for a 150 DT
  2. I believe a 24 gal sump can be made to work with some ingenuity
  3. Equipment utilization will be limited, so bigger will allow for more equipment options
  4. Everyone's household and budgets are different, so everyone has to do the best with what they got sometimes
  5. If the 24 is temp, then make sure to plumb it in with future expansion in mind. Example: Use unions and/or valves to make swapping easier.
Just my opinion.

Reference my signature line. I tried to go with the biggest sump/fuge I could make work. I would do it again too. ;)

Meant to add that my sump/fuge is actually a 110 gal, but only make use of an estimate 75+ gals of space within. :)

I have a 425xl and just got a 150sca with steel stand. I realized I may need a bigger sump but thought transfer livestock and get it running temporary until I get a bigger sump.
