Was doing some maintenance on the sump today, and accidentally dropped the full skimmer cup back into the sump. I immediately threw a mj1200 pump into the skimmer section where the spill occurred, and pumped out about 5 gallons of water, and replaced that with fresh saltwater. I also adjusted the skimmer for a wet skim. The sump holds about 20 gallons of water total for a 60 gallon mixed reef display tank. I was wondering if there is anything more I should be doing, and what are the negatives I could be expecting? Thanks guys.....

This happened to me two weeks ago. I just turned the skimmer a bit wetter and did a 20-25% water change. Within 24 hours everything was fine.

I don’t keep difficult coral or sps or anything but my clam and “expert level” fragile fish all did just fine. If you have fragile coral in there I think you’ll still be fine but I do recommend a water change. If the skimmer removed the filth once it can do it again.

In my case, my skimmate was almost black. I had my skimmer turned down for the past couple months due to splashing out and the stuff I dumped in turned my entire tank brown. It was pretty bad. All good now!

You could have a small phosphate & nitrate spike, even after doing a couple of water changes & might see a small spike in algae growth, but should be okay & manageable.

The skimmer will pull out that gunk 10X faster than it took to collect it in the first place. let it work and do nothing else out of the ordinary.
