Look at these eggs building up in the tentacles. Will these self fertilise or would there have to be other hammers of the same species in the tank?

Nope. Something else. I highly doubt it coral eggs ...let’s see what other say. Snail and other things can give eggs like that, but never heard of them laying eggs on corals. My guess it’s something else

I think those might be the eggs of an unwanted guest. They usually release sperm and eggs at the same time, or a bit of the tentacle will detach and attach to substrate elsewhere to form a new colony.

How do you know those are hammer eggs and not from another creature? Not being snarky, genuinely curious.

Huh, would you look at that, pretty cool. I have never seen that before. Keep us posted.

Apparently, the fertilised eggs turn into free-swimming planula larva that become part of the plankton for a while before settling out on the substrate to form a new coral. Very unlikely any of these would survive in a tank, they would get sucked up by the skimmer and filtration system or be eaten by the fish.

the links weren’t on the post when I hit the reply. It looked like I was the first reply.
