Is neoprene enough under a 180?

I ordered that neoprene mat off of BRS, to put underneath my 180. I’m wondering if that will be enough cushion though, as it is actually pretty thin.

Anywhere I can get something local that will suffice? I see a lot of people using styrofoam?

I use 3/4 faced Styrofoam from home depot on my 187 and it works very well.

Why do you guys use "padding" under your tanks?

Legit question. I have a 200 that sits right on the stand. I'm not really concerned since the tank has been running for 3yrs between two houses. Just wanted to know if I missed something.

My tank is frameless. So the bottom glass sits directly on the stand. The manufacturer won't warranty my tank without the neoprene cushion. If your tank has a frame on the bottom, the frame is designed to support the tank and you don't need the neoprene.

Foam or neoprene pads are designed to even out pressure from localised high points in contact with the underside of your tank to prevent the glass cracking.

In your case, it probably isn't a concern. As it likely would have cracked before 3 years. However, if you take it down later, it would then be a good idea to install one. But I wouldn't tear down your tank just to install it.

What color is that? Like I said I have the neoprene from BRS under my tank. The top of the stand was perfectly flat to my naked eye. I’m wondering if that will suffice. I don’t want to lift the tank up again ha.

How quickly would a crack happen? Hard to say I’m sure. I had water in the tank for a couple weeks alreadyx

Styrofoam is white. If you already have neoprene and the top of your stand doesn't have any raised points, your neoprene will do the job fine.

Cracking would most likely happen as soon as the tank is filled. The extra weight creates extra pressure at a given point causing cracking.

Is your tank a rimless or a tank without a frame? If it has a frame, you don't need anything, but the thin pad won't harm anything.

I too asked Felix at Reef Savvy about the thin pad that BRS sells. He told me not to use it, but to use at least 1/2" thick styrofoam. I ended up using a 1/2" rubber mat from a local farm supply store. I got that idea from SPSPirate on here, who had a larger Reef Savvy than I do.

Yeah it’s without a frame. Just a rubber mat huh?

This is what I will be using: https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/p...t-black-4-ft-x-3-ft-x--frac12-in?cm_vc=-10005

I didn't want to use Styrofoam because of a friend's tank that had an issue. He had a lot of weight towards the back of the tank (rock wall). Over time, the tank actually started sinking down into the Styrofoam at the rear of the tank. It was to the point that it was very noticeable. There may have been other issues at work with his tank, but I can't get that image out of my head. :-)

Whelp, completely overlooked the fact that my tank is already plumbed....looks like the neoprene under my tank is there to stay.
