Does our Torch look okay? It’s been somewhat retracted for a couple days now. We purchased on the 10th and it’s still in light acclimation mode, but it seems somewhat more retracted than before. I saw a post on the forum about avoiding stressing the coral even more by moving it all around, so we haven’t done that. Is this normal? Tank parameters are as follows Alk 11, Ca 440, Mg 1410, pH 8.2 (I don’t know how our magnesium got that high because we don’t dose -could that have anything to do with it?). We target feed reef roids twice per week. We don’t have fish yet because, as one reef keeper told us, “Stability first.” All of our other corals look okay. Maybe we’re being paranoid? More time? Maybe it’s just too young/new for it to not look any other way?

The picture that’s taken from the side angle is right now. The other, more grainy photo is from the day we got it. We’ve grown rather attached to the idea of having a Torch and thought we’d ask the community for any thoughts.

More importantly, what are parameters? High nitrates or salinity problems does that to Euphyllia

I been losing my Euphyllia left and right. I just got my Icp test and it shows my salinity at 1.029... my calibration solution is defective . I’m going to lower to 1.026 over time. You think that could’ve been the cause ?

Is this the Deep Abyss Torch Coral from Unique Corals? Not a good sign that it’s skeleton is showing. I don’t think your Mg is an issue, Mike is at 1380 and mine is doing fine. Your parameters look good right now but anything that might’ve caused them to swing recently? (i.e. dosing, salinity or temp swings, etc.?) Has it looked like this since you got it? Typically it should open up within a couple of days. Mine opened up almost immediately when placed in the tank. Maybe too high of flow? I wouldn’t suggest dipping it while it’s already stressed.

Thank you all SO MUCH for the help! I feel a lot less crazy! The flow is probably moderate to low. The main Powerhead is above it, but it doesn’t get blown around by it too much because of its positioning under it.

Parameters
Salinity 1.025
Alk 11
Ca 440
Mg 1410
pH 8.2
Nitrates 10
PO4 Unknown

In all honesty, because it’s a nano tank, we didn’t think we would need a PO4 test, so we don’t have one. Should we rush deliver one? I feel super irresponsible now, but we were told because of the skimmer and size of the aquarium that it wasn’t necessary (though maybe I misunderstood, which is entirely possible).

Someone asked if there were recently any swings in parameters and we did dose calcium for the first time several days ago. It was low after the addition of an elegance, Duncan and several others. We used a half recommended dose, but it still spiked 40ppm in a single 24hr period. If this was the cause, will it rebound?

So right now: Remove coral and dip (we have SeaChem’s reef dip)? Then return to its spot? Someone made a good point about if it’s wisest to do that in the midst of it already being stressed? Should we do a PWC as well?

Just want to say thank you again to everyone! Feels great being apart of such an open and helpful community!!

When the tentacles are receded like that it usually mean too much light. The tentacles are like solar panel so what it's doing now is reducing the surface area. My guess is that it's shocked from the increase amount of light.

I can recover but it will be a long time before it does.

Also, with nano tanks whenever you do water change you're making the water clearer which increase light penetration. You need to lower your light intensity or do very small frequent water change to make sure you don't shock it again.

UPDATE:

The torch appears to be doing A LOT better! We did a water change and adjusted the flow in its spot, and it seems to have really perked up!! Thank you everyone for the stellar advice! It was also affirming to know torches can be finicky and a good barometer for how things are doing in our reef. So relieved we seem to be out of the woods -or at least close [emoji1316]
