Is oversizing an HOB overflow box okay to do?

Ive got a 90 gallon tank and was looking at getting the pf-1000 HOB which is rated for 150gal, what would be the general rule of thumb with this?

I would do that but the hob is the only option ive got at the minute

That being the case, I would go with HOB equipment. I played around with a siphon overflow but could never really bring myself to trust it.

No. The issue is the the flow rate. Its a balancing act between fast enough to ensure bubbles don't build up and too fast and overwhelming what the siphon can handle. The issue I have is that if bubbles DO start to build up in the siphon, the flow rate slows, trapping more bubbles, and the problem compound itself. Make sure you watch it and adjust as needed. That may involve cleaning the pump and the tubing itself on both the drain and return side. HTH
