I recently bit the bullet and added an Achilles Tang. I want to make sure and fatten him up as much as possible, thus far he seems to prefer brine shrimp to hikari mysis.....much to my frustration. I used PE years ago, the fish of course liked it, but angels and triggers like anything, I stopped using it because it was messy, hard on the skimmer, and expensive. Just curious if people with finicky fish think it’s worth the trade off.

P.S., I’ve successfully kept an Achilles before for many years, but I inherited that one already eating anything.

The biggest part of your tangs diet should be nori.....that is what will fatten him/her up. As far as meaty foods, it's my opinion that variety is the best. Guarantees that your fish will be getting what they need in one, and hopefully more of the foods you're feeding. What I do is every day they get something different from the day before. I vary my feeding with mysis, DIY fish blend, DIY mollusk blend, flake food, pellet food, shrimp blend, and whatever other foods I've picked up. But again, every day my tangs get nori to pick at....it's their primary diet food.

Meaty foods and vegetation are essential for this tang. I use LRS herbivore, formula 2 (frozen and flake), frozen mysis, plankton, brine, oyster eggs and more. Nori is recommended also on a clip

I’m not really asking what to feed Tangs. I recently lost a Sohal tang I had for 12+ years, I’m not Bob Fenner, but I’ve been around the block more than a few times. I was asking for opinions on PE Mysis for picky fish.

Brine shrimp doesn’t have much nutritional value. I feed both pe and hakari mysis mainly because they are different sized shrimp. Tangs and bigger wrasses love the bigger pe mysis; Smaller fish prefer hakari sized mysis ime.

I haven't seen the need to buy it over Hikari mysis, lets say. My achilles loves hikari. I DO think PE Mysis is overpriced.

Is it more expensive than hakari? I have never noticed much of a price difference or a shocking bill after buying food or anything.

I get the huge flat pack of small mysis from Hikari for a little more than the small pack of PE mysis

Not unusual for an Achilles to just eat brine. Mine fattened up on just spiralina brine for almost 6 months before finally eating nori and mysis. I don’t think PE mysis is necessarily worth the trouble over the standard hikari mysis (hikari also makes flats from a larger species of mysis, but none of my fish would eat it). The nutritional advantage was mostly debunked years ago because of dry versus wet weight measures.

FWIW, a 16 oz. pack of hikari is nominally $12; same size flat of PE is $26 .....
