So I’ve had my tank for about a year now and have really noticed a population bloom in my copepods. (Especially in last two months since fish are in QT) my question is, is phytoplankton really necessary for copepods? It’s honestly been about 4 months since I dosed any in my tank and they seem to be doing just fine. I also have plenty of algae on my glass then I constantly have to scrape off so I would imagine they are feeding quite a bit on that.

I think it's unnecessary. I have plenty of pods in my tanks and never dosed phyto in my current tanks. I messed around with making my own phyto in the distant past, but didn't see any positive results. There was more algae growth in the system due to the higher bioload of adding that stuff.

That’s exactly what I’m afraid of. I already have a really decent clean up crew and they still don’t cover all the algae that grows in my tank on the glass so the last thing I need is more of a bloom that becomes out of control.

No

when i used to dose phyto it gave me lots of extra algae work. doesnt mean its bad for everyone, ill not need it.

For most reefs no, not necessary. However if you have a pension for keeping NP gorgonians, I believe it can be very beneficial and many NP coral people culture their own.

Most the refrigerated bottled stuff is lousy, never agitated daily like it supposed to be and its expensive. Phytoplan by TLF is an excellent alternative as its spray dried phytoplankton.
I also really like their product marine snow.
