My understanding is that Red Sea salt actually comes from the Red Sea, as in they remove large amounts of seawater and let the water evaporate out. Would that over time deplete the sea of salt and reduce its salinity?
Maybe the amount harvested is just too small to make a dent. Assuming:
- Red Sea is 6x10^16 gallons
- 700,000 saltwater aquariums in the US
- 50 gallon average size, with 10% changes weekly so each aquarium requires 250 gallons of fresh saltwater per year
That means if everyone in the US used Red Sea salt, we’d harvest 1.75x10^8 gallons per year (250 gallons x 700,000 tanks). Dividing by the volume of the sea, that’s 0.0000003% of the Red Sea per year.
So... no measurable impact even after many years of harvesting.
Does that sound roughly right, so I can continue to use Red Sea salt guilt free?
