Reef or nothing. I’ve had a fresh water before. It’s cheaper to keep and buy fish for, but eh. Just boring to me. I had fresh for about 3 months then switched to salt. Never going back

If for any reason I go back to freshwater, I will go back to keep Discus. I still have some pictures on my phone.

I actually just broke down my Discus tank to convert it to a reef. I LOVED my discus and had 3 breeding pairs in there (17 Discus total). My problem was the water usage on a 200 gallon discus tank. I was doing daily 40 gallon water changes and it got old REAL fast. I would love to do it again, but not until I can setup a proper AWC system.

AWC system will be the best for Discus. They need pristine water and probably some buffer to get then healthy and growing.

Did the planted tank for FW, was fun but like the reef side more. Although, I am planning to do a planted SW tank with macros and mangroves being the main focus.

If you got out of reefing would you ever consider a planted tank or any other type of aquarium?

I just traded my 75g reef for a 30g to make water changes easier and cheaper. My next plan is to turn the 75 into a planted. Canister filter, (already have) ferts (cheap) and co2 (need to get and it’s about the most expensive piece). Water changes? drain then turn on the hose, no mixing necessary.

I 100% want to do a planted freshwater tank once I graduate this coming spring and finally have some consistent free time (full time work plus full time school is rough). I love the lush green planted aquariums that have a very zen garden feel to them - I have a lot of leafy green plants in my living and would love to further complement that with a planted aquarium.

I have both. Reefs are lower maintenance than a high-tech aquascape. Anyone who says otherwise wasn't keeping an advanced planted tank.

when folks visit my place they unanimously like my planted tank over the reef....the first question i always get is “Are they both saltwater?”. for me I love them both.

I learned alot and got tons of enjoyment from freshwater. The problem for me was at some point its kinda like youve finshed the book, theres nothing left to do. Thats what brought me here. Reefing seems like a choose your own adventure that literally never ends. I already have plans for my next two tanks and my very first reef tank is still cycling!

Man, a large blackwater planted discus tank with a shoal of rummynose tetras would give any reef a run for its money.

I do both but I’ll be the first to tell you this little 5 gallon nano planted is a lot more work! But it’s fun and if I get out of reefing for whatever insane reason I would absolutely do a big high tech tank.
