I know aerosols are bad, but any issues with spraying a liquid bug spray on the baseboards? Something like...

What are you trying to get rid of? May have better luck making your home harder for them to get into.

I would be very wary of any sprays near the tank, even sprays that are just a liquid through a nozzle. If you absolutely must use them around the tank, I'd plastic wrap the top of the tank first, so nothing can get in. Feed an airline tube with an airstone in for oxygen, and poke a couple small holes so the added air can get out.

Thanks. I just typically spray my baseboards in the Fall. Not spraying for anything in particular, a few spiders and ants is all.

Have you tried any other control methods? Spiders really aren't a concern (the vast majority of suspected 'spider bites' are actually caused by something else, and they eat bugs for you), and ants are usually easier to get rid of by not having food loose in your house and by plugging holes so they can't get in. It's obviously up to you, but I always get a little concerned about the health of both the person and the environment when people try to get rid of random bugs with poison. Pesticide overuse isn't good for anyone.

I wouldn't call once a year use overuse. I use this exact spray around my house because plugging holes won't keep spiders out and I have like embarrassingly severe arachnophobia, so I use it probably more than is healthy for me, not sure of the effect or lack thereof on my reef. I mostly use it around doors/windows etc, rarely in the hallway where my reef is.

Limiting spraying to doors and windows is a good idea, especially for the room the tanks are in. Thanks

Hmmm...my parents spray the outside of the house, and also used an expanding foam to fill in the cracks of various windows that they never open. Granted, I've also swatted like 20 flies in the past two days for some reason, so it's not entirely bug proof.

I'm agreed on the spiders and ants. The spiders have never really gotten that bad, and at least they're slow. Reducing the amount of openings in the house for bugs to get into, will simultaneously reduce the spider population, and they'll just eat most of the bugs that wander into your house. Spraying vinegar or lemon juice helps get rid of the pheromone trail that ants produce, so once you've properly stored your food (including fish food!), you can use the vinegar and lemon juice to keep the ants away.

Thanks for the vinegar / lemon juice tip!

A lot of flies in the house all of a sudden often means something has died and is rotting nearby. The flies are the result of maggots in the carcass turning into flies. Doesn't have to be something big, just a rat or such.

The question is why. What are you having issues with. Rarely does this work.

I spray for spiders with no ill effects. If I can dip my livestock in Bayer and they survive then spraying baseboards should be no problem.

I don’t use bug spray because I have a dog and two small children. The spiders around me get very large and they aren’t welcome in my house. I use glue traps in my garage and basement (where the fish tank is) and catch quite a few spiders, crickets, beetles and little centipede critters with 1 million legs. Non toxic and works well. If you have little ones or pets, make sure they are tucked far underneath furniture or something. IF a pet or child gets stuck, vegetable oil will release the glue...speaking from experience.

This stuff actually works really well.......only issue is it needs to be re-sprayed monthly throughout the summer. We use it for the large black ants. Animal and child safe as soon as it dries. I feel like I work for Ortho lol.

Been using that spray for years now, good stuff. I spray baseboards and window frames twice a year.

I have a cockroach colony to feed a chameleon and giant toad along with two dogs. No issues with any of them.

Large black ants are carpenter ants. Make sure no vegetation is touching the house and treated exterior as well as base of trees.

You'll be fine to spray that in the same room as the tank. Just don't spray it in the tank.

Most, if not all, sprays like that use a surfactant to help it adhere to the surface you spray it on. You should get little to no spray in the air.

Do you have cats?? You need to check the ingredients to see if it uses permethrin as an active ingredient.

Thanks for the info.......we had a bug guy come out that did confirm the same thing. We actually had to have several large trees removed from being eaten at the base. I now spray both the exterior and interior, as well as around all of our trees close to the house.
