Is surface skimming 100% neccessary?

I have a 20g nano reef and I am currently not surface skimming I am just using surface agitation and a hob filter.
What is your opinion on surface skinming? Is it always neccessary?

I don’t think necessary, but beneficial. It’s not just pulling junk from the top, but it creates a little turbulence to help gas exchange. The same can be done with Wavemaker and good surface agitation.

If you were thinking about the aqua clear skimmer, I personally would skip it. It takes up a bit of room, if the surface has enough waves you don’t need it, and I was think it may be a hazard for a fish to jump into.

But, it was kinda cool too. Let us know what you go with

you can literally use like a cheap PVC pipe with a suction cup to do it


You don't have to spend 50 bucks on a custom acrylic thing

Just get a 2" ABS pipe from Home depot and glue in an endcap. 10 bucks at most

I may consider that! This post is a little away from my case of that skimmer I'm just curious on peoples opinions on surface skimming

You do not. There are a lot of people who run the popular 40 breeder without drilling, overflows, surface skimming, etc. I ran one that way for 5 years. When I needed a skimmer I busted out my trusty old CPR Bak Pak. Similar to what many do when running QT systems.
