Hi all,

I am new to the hobby, and I am in the process of setting up my 40 gal cube. I got some liverock recently, and today, I noticed this in my tank.

That looks like apstasia to me. Is that correct?

I do not have any livestock currently except for one brittle starfish. So, I could treat it with medication if needed, or get a peppermint shrimp.

Thanks all!

Beautiful! Send it my way...

I use a file fish. He is great at eating the aiptasia. I heard they can eat or nip at Zoas. Mine does not bother any of the corals. If you can get one, try it.

I got Berghia and need food for them. They are better at actually wiping out Aiptasia but only eat Aiptasia so to maintain them I actually need to breed Aiptasia. And I'm always looking for new Aiptasia strains to add to the gene-pool.

hi all,

I got the peppermint shrimp 2 days ago. Now apstasia is gone! I was thinking of filefish as well but did not see any at my LFS.

I will keep an eye out. I had some but haven’t seen them in a while. *knock on wood*

Chances are the aptasia is in other areas of the tank. My experience is that you should check overflows sumps and so on.

Nudibrachs are great as long as you get the correct species as aptasia eating is specific....also, my fish love these guys, they make for nice snacks. Final thought, they will starve to death if there is no aptasia.

File fish, some just don't eat it, or if they are well fed, won't eat it. I have had 3 never seen any of them eat it....I tend to over feed.

Peppermint shrimp, there are look alike, so research. Most LFS and online are ligit.....stay away from Petco and big stores.

Various, treatments such as lemon juice, kelkwasser, and Aptasia X. Key with these is getting the treatment into mouth..or whatever it is called, and covering the animal. People will complain that these methods cause more growth. What happens is as the animal dies they release spore or whatever they are called. Covering the animal contains the release and kills the spores.

I also rotate my live rock and always have rock drying

Without draining your tank, you are most likely just containing it. I employ every thing I listed above in my DT,overflow, and sump. I am only able to contain it. Once it is in your tank it never leaves.

FYI I have FOWLR, so there is more to consider with corals
