Just as the current fashions set the pace for the mainstream world the same can be said for certain corals in the reef hobby aka Duncans, Acans and Chalices. It now appears the insane chalice craze could be over??

Many of the reefers i talk to are just tired of the greed associated with chalices. Every single one seems to have a name on all the websites and demand top dollar, even the boring looking ones. It has grown to the point where i as a reefer have certainly lost interest in them.

I agree, they same thing happened to me..Although I still Love them I have stopped collecting almost completely (Vince I'll see you Sunday LOL), my interest have increasingly ramped back up for the "Sticks" my first love :D and to further that I am getting the encrusting Monti bug again

The chalice thing seems to have gotten out of control before the economy turned south, and kept rolling for a while, but I think the current situation will call a halt, or at least a slowing, to the ultra-high priced chalice thing....I'm already seeing a LOT of the crazy priced ones available for MUCH less....

It seems like sometimes it's price and not rarity that keeps the pretty ones away from the masses....then suddenly everyone has it, and it's virtually worthless...think about the craze for Sunset Monti....now it's almost like if you have a reef you have Sunset....

I voted no but I hope it is. I think the crazes that cost people thousands of dollars for a year or so and then you can give the things away is stupid. I am a colored sticks guy so I understand about the le corals, but when you get something in wild stick a name on it, throw it at the bandsaw and charge 150 an eye that is crazy. I have a few of the mainstream chalices mh, bgm, jayda stuff like that I have traded for but I just cant get into making people that much money on a 1/4 inch piece of something you cant tell what it is for 6 months. So to sum it up I am (sticking) -no pun intended- with my acros.

I don't know maybe its just me and not sure why nobody else see's this, but I got into the chalice craze a couple years ago buying the tiny 1/4" frags only to watch them grow and then recede then grow and struggle then look good again. I have friends that have had the same results. When I can buy a 1/2" 20k Lokani or Ice/fire for $100.00 and watch it grow into a 6 inch colony while I'm fragging it in the time it takes these chalices to grow to 2 inches sorry I'm out.

I agree, I have seen a lot of people dump their entire chalice collection and get out of them recently. The reason they cost so much in the first place is actually there downfall IMO, that being the slowwwwww growth rates, whereas Acros and Monti's give a bit more back in regards to growth rates

I agree it's getting ridicules and I refuse to support that kind of market. I recently was told we were due to receive a pink and green watermelon chalice. I thought great I will either sell this whole at a reasonable price or at least make some larger frags and sell at a regular markup verses the current pricing. We didn't get it and I was told it was because it wasn't looking healthy and wouldn't make it but we can send you a large one for $1000. I almost lost it. Even the collectors and distributors are fueling this fire. I won't be part of it period. There are way to may awesome corals out there. If I'm told I have to pay a premium for x coral I'll tell them to keep it or better yet move on to another vendor.

Honestly I never really understood the chalice crazy... I mean they're kind of dull looking IMO. Just look like a blanket of color. As opposed to cool structures such as sps or even torches. I wouldn't mind if it kept going though. Seems to keep the prices down on other corals. If it were though... what's next?

I'd say yes Kevin, but my collection is way more than I ever thought it would be. There are just too many pieces, too many threads and too many people that charged way too much to sustain the hype. Sure, it will continue in smaller numbers, but it will be nice when corals get back to the price where they should be. Some of the prices we have seen over the last 6 months or so was sickening :(

Yup, you have quite the collection Mark! :)

Thanks Kev, The only problem about collecting is that you get tired and then you have to make some really tough decisions about consolidating down :( I haven't even been hitting any of the sites and I am afraid to count how many different pieces I have. I just did a major overhaul of my second tank and it was eye opening :squigglemouth:

This topic was well timed :D

I think the craze is dying down. I agree that I'd like to see some brain corals come into full swing. Favia, Favites, Goniastrea, and Platygyra can all have amazing colors.

Think it is slowing down some, but is nowhere near dead. Personally, I love chalices and see no point in letting the craze ruin it for me. Lately, have been getting into cheap colonies from LFS and what not, and trading small frags of my le's for big pieces of beautiful no name chalices. Agree with you regarding sticks and montis Kev, they do give more back sooner and are so easy to frag.
