Is the torch craze dying? Whats next?

Something makes me think Scolys are going to get hot, and expensive since they cannot be propagated. They’re $150-$250 depending on the type. I could see them closer to $400-$500 eventually. I think propagation is mainly what drives down price and hype.

That’s what I was including in my thought was ease of propagation. Those that can’t be propagated I think will always command a higher price.

Why on earth does it matter? Isn't it good enough to just like the corals for what they are instead of chasing trends?

It doesn’t really. But it’s fun to speculate, and it brings certain corals most people thought were once impossible like the goni back to the forefront which is cool.

I have to agree with @biocubeboy it doesn't matter it's just interesting to discuss and speculate on. It's interesting why certain things (not just corals) gain popularity for some seemingly unknown reason and intrinsically become more valuable.

As others have stated, it doesn’t. For me it’s fun to speculate. When I came back to the hobby, I had no clue what a bounce mushroom was or that a common torch coral with a unique color variation could well for hundreds a head. Gonis were a no no as no one could keep them alive. I honestly find it fun.

Not that the hobby is something to make a profit on but it could be just like hitting the lottery if the one item in your tank is suddenly worth hundreds or thousands of dollars if you decide to frag it cause it’s the next big thing

For me, it’s all in the fun of speculating. Just like stocks. I have corals that I will gladly frag and others, no matter what they’re worth, I’ll never purposefully frag.

First post here but I really hope so. I’m new to corals and only have like 4 frags(easy ones). I really like torches but can’t bring myself to get any yet cause they are to expensive to possibly have die in my tank cause I’m new. Hopefully the craze dies so the price comes down.

I feel like gonis are going to be the next in thing they are so pretty and now that more people can keep them everyone needs to get their frag

The industry has been unfortunately pricing themselves up and out for 3-4 years. Who wants to spend $200-750 or more per head for a torch, an animal that could die in a heartbeat, regardless of how careful you are. It’s heartbreaking and wallet draining. Not sustainable.

There are a number of lesser expensive, hardier corals. Time to refocus.

Scolys are always hot. Always were when I looked. Not a coral that does well to fragging. Usually dies.

I always loved goniopora! I have 5 frags atm.
Torches are a third.

Gonis are the new "it" coral over on IG now, so I'm guessing it won't take long for them to blow up over here.
I agree with @MERKEY, gonis are blowing up all over the internet.

I still see torches that are ridiculously expensive, and I wish they weren’t. Lots of older folks on here have said that back in the day, venders would sell their “premium” torches for $40 a head, now a days? More like $100 a head.

I get that some torches have to be more expensive than others (just because some of them are truly stunning) but come on, some of these prices are ridiculous.
