Is there functionality or reliability that would warrant the extra cost to this check valve?

If your sump is too small and if it works when it is supposed to, yes.

I use a wye check valve on both my tanks. On my 66 gallon tank, I've had that one for 2 tanks over a 11 year period.
No parts to wear out. Works fine as long as you do routine maintenance on it. I clean mine out every 3rd water change.
I don't depend on them to stop a flood. My sump can handle any drain back during a power outage. I use them mainly to keep the water level from affecting the skimmer. Once in a while, or during a water change I'll shut off the return pump to do something. If I forget to remove the skimmer cup, the water level in the sump can affect the skimmer and make it overflow, returning all that skimmed crap back into the sump.
