Is there a reef safe angelfish?

Not knowing the size of your tank.... I like the swallow tail route. As for other angels, I don't care what people say... they are a risk with coral. I have a flame that doesn't bother corals. I have LPS and Softies in the tank with him. He hasn't destroyed anything. I have a friend who had one in his reef tank and is convinced it picked at a lot of stuff. I have had coral beauties... and other pygmy varieties. It is going to be hit and miss ... you might get a model citizen and you may get an unholy terror....

I did like one of the previous poster's suggestion.... wrasses can be a great fish to add to a tank. You will need a good top on it to prevent carpet surfing. But... there are some really great fish you can get there that have incredible color. I also like Anthias. I have a bunch of them in my larger system and don't miss having any angels in it. They are active, colorful and safe for all corals.

Good Luck.

I have a coral beauty for about 6 years. Model citizen in my predominantly sps and some lps 190 gal. Tried a flame angel years ago that liked to eat Acans.

When you first get him, he will feed on the reef and that is about it. After he gets comfortable they like frozen brine, Mysis, and meaty morsels. Great fish. They also eat off the algae clip.

Second this. I have a blue tang that I helplessly watched kill my trachyphyllia over the course of a few days. However with all my fish she is very peaceful and hasn’t looked at any other coral.

Here is my female Swallowtail, totally Reef safe and very very active..

The most reef safe I have encountered is Genicanthus species. Now if you have lots and lots of money, you can buy the holy grail - Genicanthus Personatus :)

Now that said, you should look into this video - the tank of GodFather of Angel and Acro keeping - John Coppolino , a very old timer in reefcentral .

He shows any angel is almost reef safe if kept properly and fed !!!

Abhishek

I have a flame angel in a 93 Cube that is pecking my Acans also. Is also terrorizing my GSP. I don’t have SPS yet but feel like it will nip. Currently trying to catch him. Not easy. I will say I did enormous homework and my math has angels 50/50 with all the content I found. Be prepared to give up certain corals or tear your tank apart to catch one if you are unlucky like I was to get the one in the bad 50%z. Another side note, I have a large whitetail tang that beat the crap out of it until it learned the rock work and now the tang leaves it alone. However now the small flame angel started picking on my male clown. So it’s gotta go.

Julian Sprung keeps an Emperor in his reef tank. Seems no hard and fast rules. Depends what else kept that angel might find appetizing.
