Is there a secret to QT Anthias?

I’ve tried QT’ing 3 sets of Lyretail Anthias all with the same results.

All dead. Bacterial (or so it seems) every time.

By set I mean 8-10 at once, all in triple anti biotic (metro, Furan, kana) and copperpower.

Anything I’m missing to successfully get a set through QT?

They always show red spots and splotches and then start dropping like flies.

Personally, I prefer to start off with always having my LFS hold on to my newly purchased Anthias for a few extra days to make sure they’re “healthy” enough for another leg of transport.

In my experience, Anthias don’t do well with stress...so if you’re moving them from 3-5 different systems in a weeks time, their immune system is shot and their stress level is high leaving them seriously susceptible to ich/infection/etc and thus impending demise.

Once I do bring them home, I start QT as observation only - no medication. Again, trying to avoid added stress. Then after a few days of observation and good eating habits are established, I’ll add antibiotics to treat any of the “what if’s”. I typically do not use copper unless it’s indicated as I feel sometimes it does more harm than good.

The first time I qt’ed anthias I put 7 lyretails through coppersafe without any losses. I always put my fish through a formalin/malachite green bath and a MB bath prior to putting them into my qt. I believe that this helps with the type of damage you are describing. Unfortunately, on my second set of anthias I used CP and killed them all.

Just so it is clear CP=chloroquine Phosphate. It is not copper power.

I had good result only in around 2 months in QT. I added batches in different time frame within the two months. I only did anti biotic for this time frame and had minimum casualty. But all of sudden they dropped like flys. I started coppersafe when the casualty increase and the remaining was from 9 down to 2 right now. I ended 30 days copper and 1 of 2 seems like to be blind... the others are still eating like pig.

Hardest fish to QT in my experience.

old topic but can someone elaborate on copper and Anthias? I am about to get some and not sure how to treat now.

I have treated exactly one anthias (Bimaculatus) with copper (Coppersafe), with levels kept at a range between 2 and 3 ppm. I made sure it was eating well before adding any copper. I then slowly raised the level to that range over 5-6 days. It seemed to go just fine at that level x 30 days. The fish was eating well and didn't have any issues in QT.

I'm not sure if you'll find my personal anecdote helpful, but if nothing else it's a bump for you . Hopefully someone else with more experience in this setting chimes in.

Hmm...are you sure it was bacterial? Anthias are somewhat prone to uronema, which can at times look like a bacterial infection with red-looking sores and such. Maybe consider treating empirically for that?

When I had anthias in qt I did prazi first then for copper I used cupramine and it did well for Me and that was when I first started to learn from the BIG DOG HUMBLEFISH.
