Is there a way to make a pump automatically turn off?

there are lots of ways. the easiest way is with a controller (apex or reef keeper or apex ) there are other ways, someone make a plug that has a float switch attached to it but can t think of who make sit off hand. some plugs have a built in timer that wont come on for a few minutes after the power comes back on following a power outage.

As for float switch could get one with a closed contact when made and use a relay to control it. When level got too low it would cut off. Also for power outage could get a timing relay that would time off when power went off, that way if power just blinked it would not cut off

I've got one of these. It turns off the main pump if the water gets too high in the aquarium (ie, something is wrong with the overflow). You could also use this to shut the pump off if the water gets too low in the sump; just have to turn it upside down. AutoTopoff.com

You could install a check valve but from what I have read they restrict flow. You can drill some smaller holes just below or at the water line to stop water from flowing back.
