So I’m really close to purchasing the first fish for my tank and I’m making sure everything is ok. My salinity is at 30.6ppt. I did a 2.5gallon water change and added only salt water and rechecked it to see that the salinity didn’t rise at all. I dipped the tester into the calibration fluid and it read it perfectly fine so it’s calibrated. I’m wondering if there are any easier ways to raise my salinity

Are there ANY ANIMALS in the tank yet? Cleanup crew or anything?

If not, you could add some salt somewhere in a high flow area like a filter sock.

If you do have animals, you will have to go much slower in raising the salinity. Do this by replacing evaporation with mixed salt water. (Turn off the ATO obviously.)

There’s is nothing in the tank except live rock.

When you add water to replace evaporation losses, you need to add fresh water, the purer the better. Most people use RODI water for top off and mixing salt water.

What do you mean by 'only salt water'?
So I have salt water in buckets and then rodi water from my fish store and I only added the salt I put no rodi in

Go ahead and add the salt in and bring it to where you want it to be.
Do I need to buy a certain type of salt? I have been using the salt water I got from my local fish store but I also have rodi water as well. So I mix the salt into the rodi and that should bring it up?

You get both from you lfs?
Yes I get both from my local fish store. I currently have a Biocube 29 as I am just starting out so I just have buckets of water to add to the tank when needed.

You can take the salt from the package and add it to the tank itself. Scoop it in and right into the tank.

Check the tds on the rodi water when you get it. Make sure the lfs is giving you rodi and not ro water. Also look into getting a rodi water maker. Saves the hassle of lugging buckets too and from.

Once you have animals in the tank, this is not the best means of raising salinity. For now it is perfectly fine.

Ok I will. I’m heading to the stores in a little bit to ask questions and also look around too.
