Is This a Bad Cycle...?

I'll get some pictures posted this evening!

...Until then... Ummm... should I be getting some sort of bubble algae on some of my rock?
I haven't normally seen bubble algae in tanks that are cycling. it tend to pop up more in established tanks. then again it is always a possibility.

Bubble algae/valonia can sprout up if your rock had a piece of it or spores on it already. If you see one, be sure to remove it. Valonia can spread fast even in a very clean water. My 180 cannot support chaetomorpha, but valonia grows in it. Thanks to my foxface rabbitfish, my valonia are mowed down pretty well except for the humongous one that he cannot get his mouth around.

Oh no... How do I remove it? : (
It seems to have just popped up overnight. Shall I post pictures?

I use tweezers, they pop but I get the root and no spread. Also emerald crabs do seem to eat the little ones.

Thanks to NARC member GatorBen, I now have an emerald crab and will report back if it eats the bubble algae that is growing in my 10g, assuming that is what the BB-sized green balls are.

Okay, did the test Friday night, this is what I got:

Hmmm...what's that up behind the damsel?

It's my emerald crab conveniently posing by a piece of bubble algae.

We'll see if the algae is there later. Photography comments and suggestions welcome. (I know I need to clean the glass.)

Your rock is so pretty. I am jealous. Where did you get it, by the way?

Oh, & my tank did NOT have bubble algae. They were tiny little bubbles of air that I thought were itty bitty bits of bubble algae. /relieved sigh

Oh my goodness, Tomoko! I AM SO EXITED!

When I add my cleanup crew, is it okay to add all of them at once, since the tank is new?

As long as you have something in there for them to clean up, there is no harm in my opinion.

yea can but you will need to provide them with some food if there isnt a lof of algae in the tank currently.. you could put some flake in or pellets or even a small algae wafer if need be..

or you could just add a few crabs and snails and add the rest as you add fish!

I usually go slow on everything. If you are going to order a cleanup crew from an online source, I suppose that you have no choice but add them all at once.

When I started my first tank, after waiting what seemed like forever to cycle the tank (only one month), I added three tiny hermit crabs to add some movement to the tank. It was fun to watch them change into different shells. I only had one solft ball size live rock to cycle my 15G.

Later on, I bought a couple of gorgeous Florida live rocks (top reef grade?) with tons of stuff on them (tunicates, barnacles, sponges, etc.) from a local store, and added some snails. I ended up pulling out the cute hermit crabs and traded them for more snails because hermit crabs turned out to be snail eaters (despite all the empty shells in various sizes around them) . When I upgraded my tank later (a few times), I started with astraea snails and added other things as situation required. This is my own preference, and there are many ways to go about it.

What fish are you going to get?

Emily, let me know when/if you decide to order fish. I am looking for a couple for a 10g for my office. If I don't find what I want locally by then, I may pitch in with you and split the shipping.

Hey guys, I'm probably going to order a couple Chromis as my first fish. They may be cheap & overlooked, but I have always loved them. I am going to enter the R2R Clowning for Clownfish contest, so maybe I will win a pair of designer clowns! If it wasn't for that, I'd buy a pair of clowns for my first fish... but I have high hopes!

Does anyone else have any fishy suggestions?

The chromis are great starters, just understand while they are outwardly peaceful, the may very well turn on each other down the road. I have some and like them. It's just that I have fewer of them than when I started. My wife actually scolds the bullies, but they don't, not unlike my sons.

LOL! Scolding them... that's adorable.

I'm definitely willing to consider some other fish, though!
