I would appreciate an ID on this - pretty sure it’s a paly. I’m working on a xenia elimination project. The stuff took over my tank. But before I clean this rock, I want to be sure I know & take precautions.

thanks!

Thats not a true paly.
Looks like a people eater zoa.

If you dont suffer from severe allergies or sensitive skin I wouldnt worry about anything as far as palytoxin just wear gloves and glasses either way and wash your hands after.

I think I see an aiptasia in with the zoa's. You can see the long tendrons in the back with the zoa.

Can you show us a picture of your tank, a few would be nice.

Thanks for the responses. Lighting is definitely something that I need to understand better. Working on the aiptasia too!

Also, here is a hitchhiker that I let grow. ID? “Texas Trash” paly?

Here’s a few pics. I’m cleaning up the Xenia - removed some rocks to clean. They’re in a separate tank. I didn’t want to get any toxins in my DT. Tank is about 15 months old now. I’m going slow for sure. I hav a really big leather that’s dropping pieces. Not sure what to do with it, to be honest.

Nice reef. I see you have quite a few astarina starfish, you must be feeding kind of heavy. I have a few of those and some aiptasia for a couple years now. I think the combined efforts of Filefish, shrimp and myself we are keeping the aiptasia numbers low.

I got this idea from a fellow reefer here. Get a stainless steel straw, 1/4"-1/2" and a length of hose. When doing water changes you can suck out your undesirables into a bucket, use a rubber band to form a seal of hose to straw. Works great. I also sucked out plenty of algae one day, won't work for aiptasia because they root into the pores of the rock. With this device you may not need to remove the rocks. Good luck.

Thanks - work in progress for sure! Especially since I’m still learning. I’ve backed off on the feeding a little bit. I have tried shrimp but they just die. Not sure why! I like the filefish - kinda cool, prehistoric looking. I think it’s slowly helping with the aiptasia.

Good idea! Doing a water change today so I’ll address some algae.

Is your clown bigger than your Blue tang? Very nice. I have a Yellow Tang, Flame hawk, File fish, two 5 stripe Damsels and two Clowns occupying 2 large clam shells, in my 75. I started with a 46 bowfront 7 years ago. This pic was 2 years ago (the tank was running for around 2 years) just before upgrading to 75 for my Tang. Yes I did get a warning from the Tang Police, I think this satisfies them.

This was a fisheye lens I used for this shot held in place by hand. One year in new tank. Most fish are close to 7 years old now. I can't add anymore fish because the Damsels will kill anything I put in, they claim the whole tank. Yellow is the boss, the Clowns are happy in their Kenya Tree until it slowly shriveled away over 2 years. Never did know why. That clam you see there died a year ago and now my Clowns are living in the shells. I am having trouble uploading my recent photos, so this is it for now. Take care.

Nice! My tank is 65 gallons. Yes the clown is bigger than the tang. It’s an aqua cultured baby. The clown is getting to be pretty hefty now!
