Is the black thing a sea urchin?

Welcome to R2R!

Appears to be, yes. They will start as juveniles with a very flat body and tend to stay in a crevice or empty barnacle during the day. As they mature they become round-bodied. If your rock is from the Gulf of Mexico, it is likely a Florida purple spined urchin. I had many seemingly hatch out of nowhere for months. They grew into their adult size in about 5 mos.
