All sponges are poriferan. Anyways I don't see any reason to fear this sponge considering that it seems to have already spread based on what OP said. (I have taken it to mean the sponges colonized that part of the sump) If they wanted to spread somewhere bad they are already in the system and spreading. Sponges are also pretty easy to pull usually. It is poriferan sponge and capable of growing crazy and even becoming evasive. Plays no significance in nitrate or such. Exposing to air will stop it in its tracks. Remove outside of the tank or in one piece as it can or may release toxins
All sponges are not poriferan- generally the stringy one s and they can smother a coral in no time as well as grow over coral, choking out the lower areas of densely branching colonies, smothering polyps and rocks, and generally getting stuck in equipment where they don’t belong. All sponges are poriferan.
