I got this about a year ago as a hitchhiker from a frag. I glued it to my rock, and the coral polyp has since died. However this "chunk" has continued to sit there, and has slowly grown onto the surrounding rock. It occasionally has green/metallic bubbles on top (but I think this is maybe bubble algae?). Sometimes an actual "chunk" of it (non-metallic, non-green) buds off and floats away.

Yeah that looks like bubble algae, do you have a cuc? Also does some food you feed not get fully consumed?

It’s bubble algae Emerald crabs will help with that

To be clear, I'm not talking about the thing circled in RED. I'm talking about the much-bigger thing circled in BLUE. That's bubble algae?

Gotcha it looked like it was rock but this clarifies it now. Can you pull it out?

I probably could pull it out, it's soft/spongy. But I don't mind it, and would like to leave it put if it's fine. It's not growing quickly, and if it's a sponge or something, I'm guessing it's doing some beneficial filtration. Feels like I'd tear it if I tried to detach it. I don't want to hurt it unless it's a pest.

Yeah it’s totally fine to leave those in the tank no harm actually does good. Your completely right. If it’s not bugging you or coral your good!

Heh "big" is an overstatement. Pic looks deceptively big - it's actually about the size of my thumbnail. (And no, I do not have humongous thumbs! :p )
Hahahaha, well you take very good pictures! What kind of camera are you using if I may ask?

Thanks!

It's a cellphone pic! (Pixel 3 phone). But I do photography as a side hobby, so I know how to use light correctly. :-)
Well you know what your doing! I could use some tips haha

Steady hands, make sure you phone is focusing, and always make sure you're phone is PARALLEL to the glass (otherwise you get chromatic aberration; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromatic_aberration ). The last one will make a HUGE diff when taking pics through air --> glass --> water transition. Also figure out how to manually set and lock the exposure on your phone's camera app - if you leave it on auto (the default), the phone will often be guessing (wrongly) about what parts of the image you want exposed properly.

Thank you I will try these!
