I picked up this acan from my LPS on Saturday. I didn’t notice this section missing on the left when I got it.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Parameters as follows:

ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 5
Salinity 1.024
Phosphate 0.21
Alkalinity 8
Calcium 440
pH 8.1

2 clowns
Goby
Pistol shrimp

Various CUC. including an emerald crab

here’s a wider shot so you can see the nearby corals

1 toadstool leather and 1 small goni frag

I’m wondering if it’s too close to the light.
It’s in a medium flow area of the tank.

Could be the crab or shrimp I’ve seen both eat and munch on coral
Looks like that head might have been on its way out from a sting or warfare from another coral or something. Don't see anything nearby that would bother it. Don't think those parameters or your CUC would have caused that either. The other heads should be fine. Maybe dip it just to be safe, then keep an eye on it.

Possible post stinging except you have coral spaced out well. other possibility is sand or other object which may have landed on that area. A crab such as emerald could do such damage.

Thanks everyone. I have been feeding the acan directly so perhaps it’s attracting CUC to it. I did also dose some Red Sea AB+ directly onto the acan. Is it possible that could have affected it negatively?

I’ll keep an eye on them
Hey what happened with the acan? Seeing similar marks on mine that was fine a couple of hours ago and now has a bit of shredded tissue and is as closed up as I've ever seen it. Thinking it might be the emerald crab? I have a couple of hermits in there too...

The polyp on the rock-side of the colony. My money is on the crab.

I'd say you caught him red-clawed as well ;). I'm going to watch mine tonight. I have a big male emerald I think may be the issue. Moved the acan to a more isolated spot they don't climb on and going to see how she's doing in the morning.

The head that was damaged “disappeared” completely. The rest of the heads seem fine. The emerald crab I have seems to be settled on the other side of the tan so all good so far.
