My view is that they are a pest. They reproduce by fission and literally one can become two in a matter of a day. Some have reported them eating corals like zoas. They are not the worst thing in the world. Most reefers live with them and have no major issue.

The ones I have I love them. Not the coral eating type and they help supplement my cuc. Just like with anything they will self regulate if you keep a clean aquarium.

It can be tricky, because Asterina is a genus of approx 20 different species. Some of them are completely harmless and act as members (although not super significant ones) of the CUC, while others eat coral and cause damage. Personally, I've never had the pest kind, but they definitely do exist.
