So I woke up this morning to a bunch of white stringy stuff all over the place. I’m on day 20 of cycling using Red Sea kit. Current parameters: Temp 78.5, Ammonia 0 (Red Sea test kit), Nitrate 0 (API), Nitrates came in at 25 today! (Nyos test). Salinity 1.026 (refractometer) Any ideas what this stuff is? It’s on the rocks, sand, and even in the sump (running a octo skimmer)

Not sure what that is, but at just 20 days in, I wouldn't worry about it unless it keeps getting worse. New tanks have an ugly stage that can last for weeks or months after the nitrogen cycle is passed.

Good luck and keep us posted.

If your following the Red Sea reef mature program, and have started adding Nopox, it looks a little like what can happen if you add to much, so yes it could be a bacterial bloom

It tends to form in areas of low flow so one way to avoid it is to increase the flow/movement in affected areas.

If you can increase flow you can maintain the dose as per the instructions, otherwise maybe back of a little on the amount used.

I sometimes get it in the sump of my S650 so I just ‘ripple’ the water surface and it keeps it clear.

Thanks, I'll adjust the wave makers to get more flow around those areas. Might lower the dosage just a bit also (if flow doesn't seem to help in a couple days or so), thank you all for the advice.

dose this dose that blah blah blah.....Let your tank do its thing. i just don't get all you people always with the same remidies, DOSE. Let nature take its course and be patient. Once you start messing with the chemicals its an on going never ending chase.... Just saying. OK people let me have it lol

In nature that would be true, but we’ve created an artificial environment in a little glass box, and sometimes we need to intervene and give it a little helping hand. Otherwise things will get out of control.

In this particular case the OP is following a particular program devised by Red Sea, and has encountered a bit of an issue which needs resolving

That will hopefully solve the issue for you.

Ive been on very high Nopox doses in my S650 (way above maximum recommend with advice from Red Sea) and the surface agitation or increased flow prevented the bacterial flocks from forming which meant I could keep on the high doses.

So hopefully this will deal with it for you
