Is this the beginnings of coraline,... or wishful thinking?

Yes, there is a diatom algea on that rock... working on it.... but it look like there is some color coming into that rock.

It could be green coralline. it’s hard to tell with the picture.
It might be easier to zoom in on this pic. I put two kinds of rock in my tank; a little over 300 lbs, Half fresh from the ocean and half cured in the LFS shop Almost all of the base rock in the cured batch That’s what I have been watching... hoping To see coraline on. This is earlier than I hoped! My tank is 5 months in. : )

50 months? or 50 days? You should have gotten coralline in the first few months.
5 months... sorry, typo... I’ll edit it

I was just referring to the post that said you should have seen it in the first 2 months. My tank has been up much longer than that and is only just starting grow coralline.
I was hoping for 10 - 12 months to be honest. ”If” that really is the beginning of coraline I am very happy!

Me personally I believe that keeping up with water changes and keeping parameters stable is the key. Trust me Coraline algae will come. But Patience is the goal.
Oh yeah agreed! I do 25 gallons per week...every Saturday Morning. It’s a 200 gallon tank... more water in the sump... plus my barrel holds 50 gallons. so, it works : )

I didn’t start to see coraline algae growth until about month 5. I’m at month 8 and it’s almost everywhere now.

make sure calcium/alk/mag are within acceptable parameters, and it should take off soon.

I had to get past the uglies, then got it to stabilize (the tank and my husbandry)

once everything seemed on tract In regards to any parameter swings and was stable for a month or two is when I really started seeing grown.

some say high no3 or po4 will reduce the growth, but mine are fairly high and it grows fine

I’m growing maroon color, pink and purple color. Also some green coraline.

Very nice! I am within days of beginning to dose as I move closer to an SPS ready tank. Everything seems to be on track : )

Those who don't have it, want it so bad... and those that do have it wish that they had 2% of what they do...

It grows over my powerhead grates and comes off in sheets:

I do understand what you are saying about the coraline... maybe I should explain my comments a little.

I am moving towards an SPS dominant tank. My tank is only 5 months old at this point. I have been looking for the coraline to show up as a litmus test showing the maturity level of my tank. I still think I need to wait a few more months before I try to buy an SPS... Seeing it show up at 5 months in... just made me feel like I have been going the right direction. : )

Back when people got pacific rock, you used to get all kinds of colors. Yellow and blue are the best, but they need so much daylight that they die off in most people's tanks of today. They stuff comes in every color and I have seen every color in a tank except for white, but I did see some creamish colored coralline once.

Some people do not even know that they have coralline since it is not purple - the green especially is quite easy to grow and very abundant much like the purple is. Be on the lookout for different colors in your reefs since they are a good sign that calcification is ready-to-go just as much as the purple is.

Here are a few colors in my reef in one photo of a Bounce Mushroom that tore it's self apart once.

Ugh i wish i had that, i need flakes like that to seed my tank. My corals are growing but have such as minimal amount that is not taking off fast enough

Coraline won’t grow in any system out of thin air. It has to be introduced. It can come in on a snail, frag plug, scraping, or bottled.

My best suggestion is, don’t worry about it. If you are keeping a very sterile system and taking extra precautions when adding things then you might not see coralline for a very long time.
