This is probably a dumb question but I’ve had my tank for 5ish month and just spotted this today. But as the title asks:

Are those bright purple splotches coralline algae?

I’ve been cycling my 70 gallons tank for a week and observe these pink spots in my layout. Is this coralline mates?
P/s: i’m seeding my tank with coralline, but my layout is dry rock 100% and I just wonder how it can grow on dry rock within a week?

Sure looks like coralline to me. A way to test would be to take a turkey baster and blast the spot. If you can blow it off of the rock, it isn’t coralline. If you can’t it probably is. Next thing to try is take something like a small knife and see if you can scrape some of it off and it comes off like a chalky hard matter. If it does that, it is probably coralline.

ahh, I tried to blow them by my nail, and it’s not removed till i use the scissor. I think it’s a good sign and i will wait for more few weeks to add livestock.

Not to be off topic, but what about buying the dry rock that supposedly has the bacteria on it and it's already purple. Is that coralline? And if so, do I need my lights on to sustain it?
