Which yeah, is an unfortunate condition for a guy who keeps corals! But ah well.

Anyway, my tank is about a year old and I have been going deliberately slowly and low-tech. Figure I'll learn about stuff as it comes up. Anyway, I finally have a pestilence in the tank and while I think it's probably cyano, I can't really tell because the color seems off. What I have is (at least to my broken eyes) more rust-colored than red, which is what all the pictures I see of cyano are. So is this it? If not, what is it? It's mostly on the sand, but I do have some on the rocks as well.

Thanks!!

Looks like Diatoms AND Cyano. Not all Cyano is red. It can be purple, green or a myriad of other colors. The red/purple is what seems to be most common in our systems.

Ah, thanks. Didn't realize cyano came in a range of colors.

First real problem in a year, so I guess at least that's good. Cheers!
