I bought these as Diamond Tail Flasher Wrasse. Recently, one of them got large very quick and color darken and transitioning to a male.
This does not look anything close to a male DT flasher wrasse. Anyone experience a female DT flasher transition into a male?
When it was female, I thought for sure it’s a DT flasher. But since a lot of the female flasher wrasse look alike, I’m questioning whether if I’ve paid a premium for something else.

Transistioning Male. Notice the pelvic fins are very long. I don’t see this in a male DT.

That does not look like a diamond tail flasher. I have one. The reason I say this is because the tail form.

I bought a female DT wrasse from a company that sold it to me as a DT.... ended up being a kwazulu fairy wrasse. Supposedly they are collected in the same area and look very similar to each other as females.

I started to question it when I notice their behavior are more Fairy-like than Flasher. I’ve had flasher wrasse(carpenter, mccosker, 8 line) and they all spent all their time in the water column. Very much like an Anthias. These peck on rocks and go into the rock work. This is a fairy wrasse behavior.
oh well, not all is lost. I’ll wait for it’s full transformation and it’s still a very beautiful wrasse.

Thanks Minh. Yeah the female started very similar. Even when it got darker, I couldn’t tell. it’s only when the pelvic fin started to elongate and the behavior that made me pay close attention to the transformation.
My enjoyment in keeping fish is to see them transform so I always get them as Juvenile. This is just another lesson learned. I’m a little bummed but really not going to lose sleep on it.

Actually @evolved have a post somewhere that clearly differentiated the two. The point is he even told Mike about it so Mike at least know that his ID is likely /possibly in error.

Ah, yet another case of "NYA sold me africanus but told me it was attenuatus"... ;Bored

Sorry for your misfortune.

Man I got 2 of them and have been disappointed how ugly the transitioning male is....... now I need to go take a second look at it!
