My cyano is red (can be different colors) and grows in mats especially on the sand but also coats some rocks and snail shells. It’s wispy and sometimes strings float in the flow. When I blow it with a target feeder it breaks up really easily into thin chunks.its only cyano now thats really odd.
I’ve never had diatoms and I’m not an expert at all, but when I saw the new picture above my first thought was that it doesn’t look like what I’m dealing with right now. That’s all I can say about that in terms of making the diagnosis.
What do your nutrients run? Do you use 0 TDS DI water? Mine is a high nutrient soft reef. I haven’t been aggressive about the cyano yet because I plan to break down and repurpose the tank very soon. But I’m in the same situation with no sump. If it is cyano I’ve read people have had success with chemiclean. I’ve tried multiple siphons as recommended but it’s too heavy; I just end up mixing it in the sand but very few chunks get sucked up, they just float with the sand in the siphon. Then it all comes back in a few days. I did have success taking the siphon off and just using the hose but 1) I do end up sucking sand with the cyano and 2) after I got my third snail stuck in the tube I gave up. So at the moment my cyano management is just blowing it around and mixing it up with water changes. But I would try chemiclean if I was going to keep the tank as my DT.
