I bought live rock and notice some growth. The lfs said it was beneficial. It appears to be dieing off. What is it and do I need to remove it right away. I have only had the tank setup for a little over a week. Have yet to see any ammonia. Have put a uncooked shrimp in and waiting. Nano 28g with factory media basket and carbon.

Green hair algae. You can pull it off with your next water change.

just remove it. It is very common in new tanks even old tanks get it. As long as nutrients are controlled you are good and yours are params are good so only time will tell. What type of lighting do you have, how old is it and what spectrum. That can cause it to grow but honestly by how new you tank is that is most likely the cause. Is the rock live rock? If so it probably hitchhiked into your tank. GHA (green hair algae) is actually fairly simple to rid of in a reef tank. So although you dont want it you could have much worse

It came from the lfs. I kind of figured it would die off and give me some decay in the tank. I have 22lbs of live rock for about a week. I have yet to introduce any life that did not hitchhike. The lightshape are what come stock with the biocube intermediate setup

I pulled some off and up close it looks like straight pieces of hair. I have also discovered what I believe to be a emerald crab that hitchiked in

Easy to remove and control IMO.

I would add that the only *good* algae is nori on a clip and macroalgaes! :D

Didn't get a photo before I moved the rock to pull the GPA off. Will get one when he comes back out

you could take out that rock and get a new tooth brush or any brush will do but you can brush it off or you can wait till your stank is ready amd stable, and you can put a tang in there. they love that kind

Awesome thats an emerald alright. Great score and they can eat hair algae but dont count on it. Since you dont have any corals you can also removing the rock scrub it with a tooth brush and spray the area with peroxide rinse and it will be dead dead dead. The LED biocube is not bad not really high light but can grow some corals and stuff its a nice tank I had one.
