ive been in the hobby over 5 years now and never had this type of algae before but I have a suspicion it needs to go. I’ve read forums in the past about hair algae but not 100% sure if this is it, if you know please chime in,

Thank you

I zoomed in on the pics and I believe it may be briopsis.

It looks more fern like to me but I may be wrong.

Is it possible for you to get an up close pic?

Perhaps pull some and lay out on white paper to see if it is. Strands or “ferns”

Hmm that looks a little thick to be hair algae, possibly Bryopsis. I'm dealing with a hair algae issue right now and it's taking forever to get rid of it. Bryopsis is much harder to fix, and unfortunately I don't know enough about it to give you a solid answer how to fix it. There are several conversations on it, though.

Hopefully I'm wrong and it is hair algae, but from my experiences, hair algae is very thin stands and don't have and defining detail, whereas Bryopsis is thicker and has very small ridges on the strands

Just looked up bryopsis pics and definitely looks like what I have, guess I’ll have to remove the stuff by hand and maybe stop feeding aminos cause I noticed since I started the aminos it’s been really taking off even though my phosphate and nitrates are very very low I think it’s eating those nutrients I’m dosing. I have a low alkalinity now too so I can stop dosing nutrients for the corals and be fine. Hopefully I can get rid of it , good thing is most of it is on rubble in sand bed and not on my liverock the corals are on.

I just tested my phosphate for the hell of it again and it was below .03 but barely above 0 so I’m guessing if I keep my levels that low and stop with amino suppliments and coral foods the algae should starve theoretically. Well I’m gonna find out cause I just picked 90% of it out of my tank so hopefully the natural approach will work for me.
Thanks everyone for your help too I really appreciate it :)

Been doing some more research and found this , it gives me hope and hopefully this works for me too.
