Can anyone tell me what exactly I am dealing with. I can’t tell if it’s ich or velvet. I’ve luckily never had to deal with it before in the many years I have been doing this. I consolidated my two tanks due to time issues and they were all doing great for about a week. Until my Achilles started showing light signs a few days ago and it seemed to go away the next day. Today I came home from work and found him like this. To my knowledge there’s only one other fish showing any type of signs but is still eating. My Achilles has not been eating and he’s the boss of the tank so never gets picked on.

I’m working on trying to find a a holding tank that can fit all my fish in the event I need to qt all of them. Only issue is I can’t do copper due to some of my live stock and I’m gonna need a pretty decent size quarantine.. I’ve been told to do chloroquine phosphate but I’m having a hard time finding it. I ordered ick shield by new life spectrum because that was the only thing I was able to find that had cp as an active ingredient. Am I able to dose the cp to the DT or will I loose too much to the live rock absorbing.

Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Tank is 455 gallons (8x4x2) and total volume around 650.

Live stock is yellow stingrays, coral catsharks, porcupine puffer, Stars and Stripes puffer, epaulette shark, tangs, sweet lips, clown and a grouper.

To me it looks like ich. From what I understand velvet is almost instant. This has been delevoping over the last few days.

I think I’m going to have to dose the tank directly. There’s no way I can get another holding tank big enough in time. My planned course of action is chloroquine phosphate. If I can find some.

Here’s the tank.

It's velvet. Ich could never cause that kind of coverage in a couple days.

Out of curiosity....if it is Velvet how fast does the OP need to take action? I know velvet can kill very quickly!
ASAP. Like yesterday!

I haven’t gotten the cp yet. I ordered some online. All fish are still eating except the Achilles. But it seems like he is holding on. I’m going to try to fw dip him if it’s gonna take some time to obtain the cp. if anything I’ll pull just him and set up a smaller qt. So I can closely monitor just him for now.

Just a heads up.. CP will kill snails and I would assume other invertebrates as well. I have used it on ich successfully before... No experience with velvet though. It also kills algae.

Thanks for the heads up. Don’t have many snails left. My puffer ate them all. I don’t think it’s velvet because from what I understand if it was the infected fish would already be dead.

I will get you some additional opinions

Velvet won't necessarily kill a fish that is healthy instantly. However your best chance of success is beginning treatment ASAP.

100% chance that’s velvet. If the body looks that bad the gills are likely in very very bad shape and the fish is starving for oxygen. Swimming in to powerheads indictates serious gill damage.

That fish needs a freshwater dip yesterday, and copper ASAP. By the time CP arrives this poor fish will be dusted.

Good luck, poor fish! :(

Thanks for your help. I’m going to give him a fw dip. How important is the ph of the fw. My ph is 8.2 and the fw is 8.4.

He hasn’t been swimming near the powerheads. Just mainly been staying in his cave.

That is another symptom of velvet. Hiding from light. The velvet affliction makes the eyes very sensitive to light.

The pH difference should not be an issue.

Agreed with velvet. I don't know whether rocks and sand can absorb CP the way they can with copper, but have read that the biofilm in an established tank can begin to break it down.

Does anyone know how well sharks and rays tolerate CP? I know they can be very sensitive to some medications.

My understanding is it is the "only way" to treat sharks and rays. CP that is...

I don't have personal experience with them. I will soon. I have to find a reliable source for CP. I think @4FordFamily is planning a ray or two for the wall tank. So I will have to get them through QT

Probably just one! :)
