We have some blue green chromis in QT. one came to us with what looked like wounds on his side - not big or scary - we figured someone took some nips at him at some point in his journey and he acted fine etc. but it's been a week and they seem no better and I thought maybe I better check it is not something like a parasite or something. Parts look pinkish ... The marks are not bumpy. Just looks like boo boos - again these were on him when we got him - didn't notice as LFS guy was bagging him up
None of his mates in our QT bother him at all and no others have any marks - is pic too bad to tell?

Unfortunately this is probably uronema. It's very common in chromis and he is most likely a goner. Humblefish will be able to advise further.

In my experience, this disease has only affected my chromis and the only other fish I've seen that got this on occasion were pearlscale butterflyfish

oh no!! it's something aside from a wound?? oh bummer!! is it gonna spread to the other chromis? DANG! I should have never put him in. I've been water changing that QT every day and it might all be for naught
thank you all .... off to read on this disease ....
I am quite sure that is exactly what it is. rats!!! are all my chromis in the QT going to need treatment? I have 5 in there, counting this guy
rats! (darn good thing I asked about this, I was just thinking it was an owie!

All your chromis are likely to die without prompt treatment. But for some reason, uronema doesn't usually affect non-damsel species. Sometimes clownfish & anthias will get it.

arrghhh ... well that's the only other fish I got in my DT right now ..... :(
I called my LFS and gonna take the sick guy in ... get another ... but also get from them one of the treatment options and treat the whole QT
does this sound remotely reasonable??
I am so glad I thought to question whether it really was a wound or not!

Honestly, your best option is to never put another chromis in your DT ever again. Uronema is a “free living” parasite which does not require a fish host. So, going fallow will not eradicate it. Most fish seem protected from it via their natural immune system; but for some reason, chromis and some other fish are not always afforded this protection. Once a tank has Uronema, it must be assumed that the disease can survive in there almost indefinitely.

After reading more and more about this disease I wasn't taking any chances. I put down all my chromis and treated with metro for 2 weeks. I added it as directed. Once that was complete I did a FW dip on the remaining fish. They came straight out of the FW dip to a separate observation tank. If you do the dip please research how to do it first. I've added the link of what I've been dealing with while treating for this disease. So far no signs of uronema on remaining fish. They will be moved to display tank on Saturday.

#humblefish was instrumental in my plan to combat this.

just trying to understand ... the infected chromis is not in my DT. He is with four other chromis in our QT. If I take the infected one back to the LFS, get a different one (with no visible problems obviously) put him in QT with the four others and then treat the entire QT, will it eventually be ok to put all of the treated chromis in my DT? I would then clean the QT tank of course and get rid of the tiny piece of live rock in there now before ever putting another fish in it.
Or do I need to give up on ever putting any of the chromis in the QT into the DT?
Thanks Humble I really really appreciate you helping me/newbie try to understand this

Oh, my bad. For some reason I had it in my head these chromis were already in the DT. I think I have you mixed up with someone else...

You are fine then. Except yes, all chromis need to be treated in the QT for uronema and afterwards I would breakdown/disinfect the QT for good measure. Don't take any chances with uronema.

Iv read alot that alot of chromis come in with cyanide poisoning still in there system so it's good to keep stress down as low as possible and acclimate them really good in a clean system.... poor guys beautiful fish... not very hardy
