I was just given this paly. It is closed / rolled up in the bag right now. These brown patches on the underside are making me wonder if it's sick.

they generally do this when ingesting food or water that has particles. Give it about 2 hours and it should again open up

Was it open when you bagged it up?
Its likely ok bur if it stays closed and the brown gets worse it may be melting.
I put it in the tank. It was open and solid dark blue when it went in the bag, but now as it is beginning to open it is solid brown!

Somethings off if it died shortly after putting it in your tank.
How do you know its dead?
Do you know the water parameters of the system it came from vs yours? Does it differ much?

A zoa isn’t dead until it’s melted away and literally disappears. The plug it was on will be totally clean like there was never anything there. If it just turned brown super quickly like that then Vetteguy and sp1187 were correct. If it’d been brown for a while, I might suspect some algae which would just mean that you needed to perform a quick dip

Perhaps I was wrong, but I don't think so. He had two and they were really unhappy and sickly looking in his tank so he gave me one to try in mine (it was just one polyp). I ended up putting it in my tank after all and it became almost completely dark brown including under actinic lights. It opened half way on one side only and then stopped. An hour later I touched it to see if it would react and it didn't. I picked up and held it under a light to look at it and there was no reaction. I assumed it was dead.
