Just got this guy in the mail this morning and saw that it had lost some flesh in transit. Unfortunate because it has some really nice coloration. Flesh is missing on several of the tips as well as a bunch of it around the central orifice. I have NO experience with these corals so don't really know how well or if it can recover. I do have a bit of experience with LPS in general and my initial reaction is that its likely a gonner. Thoughts?

I know it's your only option to save some of it.
Ya, now I have to find a part that isn't already dying. I don't know if you can see from this image but overnight its lost about another 30% or so of its flesh.
Not sure Ill purchase one of these shipped again. The shipper has a 7 day alive guarantee on his stuff and after talking to him I believe that he thinks this is going to recover.
Wishful thinking I'm afraid.

This pectina ain't going to make it in its current status.
Fragging will your only option.
No that said if you have a 7 day warranty I suggest use it.
I believe you mentioned you received the coral in the bag already losing tissue.
That must be proof enough.
Looking at your other corals I can say that your water quality is good.

Grim. Yes warranty. Was the bag filled with water completely? How big was the bag. Local temps from shipper ok, and ask if it was packed in O2.

Ya, water quality if fine. Nice healthy tank - aside from the slow decline....

recently saw a video of a tank that showed if even a bit of flesh is alive pectina will grow back,id leave it alone if you dont mind looking at it in its condition

Fair sized bag but used the indo double plastic wrap. I see that often but not my favorite as I have a hard time believing it doesn't harm the coral. In this case it may have been done to preserve the bag from the pectinia spikes.

As you can see the coral had indeed lost a bunch of flesh in the bag.

At this point its reminiscent of a shambling zombie dropping flesh with the passing of small clownfish.

I did however score this chalice at the same time and it looks great so I don't thing it was a heat issue.

With respect to 02 - I was under the impression that was a bad idea - 02 amplifying the toxicity of ammonia. No?

That corals was shipped in bad shape and should be refunded no questions asked period...I would never accept a coral in that condition.Ask for his shipping # and send it back, or get a total refund.

Yup, he has a refund policy and Ill be using it. I would have save that coral if possible though. I hate that so many die like this.

That is weird.
http://extension.missouri.edu/p/MX392 air in bag article. Usually its referenced to fish as they use more 02.
So it looks like the idea behind this is that as C02 is outgassed and replaced with 02 and the following PH swing is what causes the toxicity to increase. I don't understand the exact path or how relevant it actually is.

the Ph swing primarily, and the possibility of more ammonia produced by different corals and other animals besides fish I think. And the o2 uptake of different animals.
Ive seen a few failed shipping problems like this and have had a couple of problems just driving home with different animals too.

In that case it may not really be an issue a

Well I am up for an experiment but that's a lot of grow back!
