Percula.jpg

Is this Percula Clownfish?. The white bars have very distinctive black borders however according to the dictionary it is supposed to have 10 (rarely9) dorsal spines. If I count them correctly it has 11 what is distinctive to Ocellaris. Can someone tell me if I count the spines correctly?

IMO I do believe that it is a percula the iris is orange. its a hard call on the fins I usually go by the eyes easier to look at Ocelaris usually have a grey/dark orange iris I believe but and percs usually have a bright orange iris I can be mistaken though.

I have a couple other pics from different angles and when I count the spines it's always 11. The coloration is more like Percula though. I have two just purchased from lfs and they were sold to me as Percula. The remaining 4 in the tanks looked exactly the same.

colors and stripes dont matter at all!

from the Mohawk of a top fin I say occy, percula seem to be more rounded

where did it come from? was it wild , or tank bread. did the occy and perc lines get crossed for your fish?

Honestly I didn't ask about their origin but I assume they are tank bread. I bought them from a pretty good lfs here in NY. I have two that look exactly the same except one is a little smaller, the way I wanted to avoid conflicts between them from the very beginning. here is another shot from slightly different angle.

as long as you dont plan on breeding them it really dosnt matter.
if you plan on breeding the clowns or it may be a possibility, I would find out where they came from or get some that you know the origin

ppl are crossing all the clowns now it is getting crazy. pretty soon you will need to get papers like with dogs to sell your fish

It will take a long time until I decide to breed my fish. For now I just want them to be healthy and happy in my tank. I believe the next time I buy fish I will buy them from an online retailer for the reason you mentioned above. And it's true it doesn't really matter if it is Percula or Ocellaris. They are beautiful, healthy and that's what matters.
Coral88 - why do you think it is Percula?

I say occy, I think the eye on percs are usually more of a copper colored.

Orange iris
If it was a Ocellaris it would be black.
Unles it's a cross then who knows :)
