i’m new to clam keeping, but i’ve done my fair share of deep diving and researching the do’s and don’ts. i bought the baby crocea today at my LFS after a few days of observation. no snails and pests that i could see or scraped off with a tooth brush while drip acclimated for an hour. i placed it on a slab of rock i also got from my LFS so it could attach to it, but after some time i noticed the one side of the mantle wasn’t as extended as the rest. i attempted to angle the clam towards the light but that corner is still not as extended.

my parameters are within range;
temp: 77-78
sg: 34ppm (raising to 35 with SW in my ATO)
alk: 7.8-8
cal: 427
mag: 1400 (been letting it lower on its own, but this shouldn’t be an issue)
ph: 8.4 (probably lower..don’t really trust my hanna egg checker)
no3: 9
po4: 0.06

Give it a few weeks. It should open further than that, but it looks fine for being new. Make sure it’s getting at least 350 PAR and maybe get your alk up just a little :)

Looks good, be prepared to increase your lighting though. What lights are you using?
hydra 32hd, with reefbrite hko kit. actually have a second set of lights i will be adding to the tank soon.
Looks okay to me. Acclimating. Pretty little guy. Keep nice and flooded with light.
i had it on a ledge for observation/acclimation, but soon i'll start moving it higher. mantle has definitely come out more, which is a good sign i believe

Especially when at an angle, the mantle extension on my derasas can be asymetric, you can also have one side of the mantle curve over the shell (top side) and the other side stick out into the water, sort of to maximize light area when holding on at an angle. In my experience, it doesn't stay like that all the time, but it can be like that for a while and I haven't seen any ill effects.

thanks for the reassurance!
