After setting up a new tank yesterday, it seems that I may have quite a bit of precipitation. My water went it at about 8.4dkh and today I noticed it had a huge drop to about 6.4dKH. There is not livestock in the tank. I didn’t test anything else, but I figure the huge drop is from precipitation. Is this normal for a new tank? I don’t really SEE any build up, but on the white sand, it’s impossible to tell and I don’t really see any on the rock. What could be causing this?

If there is nothing living in the tank yet, calcium carbonate will be especially prone to precipitating. Things like organics and phosphate do a lot to slow that process.

Ammonia cycling also consumes alk if that is happening.

This is what I figured. I just wanted to make sure. We don’t set up new tanks everyday so of course the goal is to get everything 100% correct. Or as close to it as you possibly can. The tank has started cycling as of today. I’m actually trying Red Sea’s Reef Mature Starter Kit, 21 day cycle.
