I just got a purple tang yesterday and have been observing. Noticed these spots when under the white led lights of the QT but not under any natural light. Is this something to be concerned? First time having a tang. Ate mysis this morning and destroyed a sheet of nori. Wife wanted to feed again so nothing tonight but not terribly worried.

These spots resemble ich. The good news is that they’re in QT already :)

I would say carry on with your medicated procedures and do your best to feed well with extra extra healthy food. I am sorry I cannot provide more guidance here, but the pros will be here soon!

agree ,try not to observe too closely, will cause more stress ,@vetteguy53081 ,any thoughts, thanks
best wishes love the purple tang!

I think raising the temp just slightly can kill off some of the parasites. Wait for a pro to chime in but I’ve read that on other forums, they say that fish stores sometimes keep the temp a little higher so the ich doesn’t show on fish they have for sale then they appear magically when you get them home and have a lower tank temp. No idea if that’s accurate just what I read

I just added a blue tang that is quite a bit smaller (with some smaller pipes the purple can’t fit into) not sure if that caused it or just moving from some guys DT to a QT. I’ll be following the below schedule for the next six weeks. I’m less worried about things than my wife is (gets so attached!). I plan on doing daily water changes for a while and maintain the same copper levels in the water changes as the QT. Any other tips?

The purple came from a local reefer that has had him a year but spent about 6 hours yesterday trying to get him out until he took out all the rock work. The blue I added today came from the LFS and has been there 3 weeks (no signs on him). I will be treating and adding metro and lacing food with GC. Also bought garlic nori and garlic mysis to feed and have spectra pellets as well. First time having tangs though so just want to make sure I’m doing everything right.

cool that explains the dinged up fins, stress ,seem to have a good handle on qt procedures, enjoy happy reefing

Appears to be velvet. Give it a freshwater bath with same temperature as the tank. Then treat with copper or chloroquine phosphate. The white dots can look similar to ich, but are smaller and usually far more numerous. If you can count the white dots its usually ich. However, if they are too numerous to count there’s a good chance you are dealing with velvet.

I don’t think that’s true. LFS will often run therapeutic levels of copper and/or lower salinity to depress parasites in their fish holding systems, but I can see no reason why temp would make any difference.

Thanks! I can’t remember which forums I got that from. I appreciate it!

Yep fair. I’ll clean the glass and take a new pic in the morning.

No judgements lol ... you should see the glass on my QT. BTW, purple tangs have a spotted pattern to their coloration that is apparent under some lighting conditions. Not sure if that’s what you meant.

Yep the LFS the blue tang came from was at 1.017 so drip acclimated to 1.025 which is what I had the QT at and the salinity the purple came from.

You think Velvet? I’m a bit hesitant to do a fresh water dip. It is dosed with Copper Power right now at about 0.85 working my way up to 1.5 over the next two days. Then up to 2 and finally 2.5
Over a total 6 day period.

Yes, pretty standard practice. One of my LFS runs 1.015 .... maybe also to save on salt. Is the hippo showing any spots? Maybe not quite the canary the Achilles is, but still one of the first to show. See if you can take a few better pics. I don’t personally see velvet.

I didn’t see any but he has only been in for a few hours. Just want to make sure they do well and this is my first time QT’ing.

They are in a 20g long (30”). Should I get a bigger QT? Like a 40B (36” I believe) or a 55g 48”? They made a mess of the nori so just took out 2.5 gals tonight to help clean out the food. Might start doing that as a nightly thing to keep the tank clean and levels down. I tried to seed the tank with ceramic rings from my DT for a week, a bottle of Biospira, and loaded up the HOB with Matrix.

I am definitely seeing white spots on the body and fins, but the salt on the glass is making it hard to distinguish.

Chasing a fish for hours can absolutely lead to death without parasitic infection.

The fact it ate is a great sign. It does not appear to be a skinny fish, which is also good.

I would start medicating right away. CP is my medication of choice, but hard to access. Copper can also work well. In QT tanks ammonia can be a real problem so you definitely want to monitor it closely. You cannot combine ammonia binders with copper, have water on hand in case you have to do larger water changes.

Yep I am running copper power right now. Currently at 0.85 working up to 2.5 over the next 6 days and will dose Metro and feed food lasted with API general cure. I believe you can use Prime with Copper Power but I have my Seachem ammonia alert badge and will be doing daily WCs for a while.

Here some new pics in the morning. Glass still isn’t 100% clean since I need to dig out my aquarium glass cleaner.
