I think you mean the ceramic rings. This is different, it will remove ammonia from the tank, it is good idea to have it but be careful with some medications like copper, where using ammonia reducers will probably be harmful.
For sponge filter you don't need anything, you just connect it to an air pump. For HOB you can use the sponge or you can add the ceramic rings to that too.
This may well remove medications from the water as mentioned. Most any type of spongy material should suffice .
So I don't need the ceramic beads at all? I have a sponge in my hob filter already.
I just use a well seeded sponge for ammonia control. Bacteria first colonizes the outer layers and then penetrates into the inner/anaerobic region of the sponge.
