Hi guys. New to saltwater tanks. I set my tank up on Dec. 20th. I added purple helix within 1 week of tank setup.

About 20 days ago I added the top rock (covered in coralline) which was donated.

I added Steve’s LEDs retrofit about 2 weeks ago. Corals are appreciating the upgrade in lighting

I’m wondering what type of algae is growing on the base rocks (green algae)? Ive circled a rock as reference.

I am hoping this is green coralline algae and it will soon turn purple. There are some scattered purple spots on the highlighted rock that are difficult to see in the pic.

What do you guys think??

picture is too small, can you zoom in and upload? For some reason this site has problems with large pictures, which is what we like... macro shots etc... zooming in... Wish they would fix it

With cheap fluval lights, I never could grow anything but green. Even with purple helix introduced, still just green. Put in live rock and the purple color would fade. When I upgraded my lights, the purple started spreading pretty
Much immediately. I don’t know if
It’s Coraline, but I doubt it’s going to turn purple. Without knowing anything about your setup, I’d say there could be a possibility of insufficient lighting down there at the bottom? What lights are you running?

I upgraded to the Steve’s LED retrofit kit 2-3 weeks ago. Since then I’ve noticed stronger coral growth, most evident with my zoas (new heads what seems like daily at this point??)

as far as algae- film algae over the glass. Increase in purple spotting on a couple of the big base rocks. There is like 8-10 small 2mm patches of purple spoting on each base rock at this point. But most of each rock is that deep green you see

mine stayed green like that for a year and a half until I upgraded my lights.

I am hoping the purple kicks in but the tank is still very young so I’ll keep my expectations low.
